Nye County School District recognizes a significant and dynamic English Learner (EL) population.  Included in the District’s Basic Philosophy is the commitment to “…meet the specific needs of the entire community in relation to the economic and cultural environment…” and to “…provide the materials, equipment and instruction of such quality and diversity as to assure each child’s safe attainment of the student’s maximum potential…” In keeping with this commitment, the following goals and plan have been developed by the District to provide educational services for LEP students.

  • EL students will be served by regular Classroom Teachers.  They will also receive services from an endorsed ESL Teacher. The School Intervention Director will coordinate with Principals, Superintendents and the State Title III Coordinator to oversee EL services for EL students.
  • Current and appropriate curricular materials, in keeping with accepted practice for language acquisition, will be acquired and maintained for sheltered English content instruction and pull-out.
  • Students new to the district will be assessed for English proficiency and placed accordingly into the school programs.  Students are then tested annually to measure the progress made in attaining English proficiency.

Nevada is a WIDA state following their standards whose mission is "WIDA advances academic language development and academic achievement for linguistically diverse students through high quality standards, assessments, research, and professional development for educators."
