The Nye County School District is governed by seven Trustees who are elected from specific areas for four-year terms. For a description of these areas, follow this link. This is the link for the map. The duties of the Board are to:
- Establish policies that direct the school district;
- Employ and evaluate the Superintendent;
- Negotiate with employee groups to determine salaries and benefits;
- Approve the annual budget;
- Authorize elections on bond proposals and other issues;
- Determine the long-range direction of the District; and
- Communicate with the community.
School Board meetings are held every three to four weeks, and meetings are open to the public. For the meeting schedule, follow this link. The Board of Trustees meets once a year in outlying communities. Other meetings are held in Pahrump with a video-conference link to the Duckwater School to accommodate the Area I Trustee. If there are issues that impact specific communities, meetings will be videoconferenced to those communities whenever possible. Occasionally, the Board schedules special meetings in order to examine specific issues more thoroughly. If you are interested in viewing agendas or meeting packets, follow this link. The section of the board meeting entitled "Executive Session" is closed to the public in accordance with Nevada law. Items the Board may discuss in Executive Session include personnel matters, discussions with legal counsel, collective bargaining and student restraints. Any actions resulting from discussion in Executive Session must be voted on in open session.
School board members are interested in the concerns and opinions of the public. By hearing from the public, the Board is able to make better-informed decisions. If you wish to speak during the meeting, please fill out a Public Comment Card, located on a table near the entrance, and give the card to the Board President before Public Input begins. Public Input is scheduled at the beginning and again at the end of the meeting. When addressing the Board, state your name and identify any organization you represent. Keep your remarks brief and to the point. Individual comment is limited to 3 minutes, 5 minutes if you are speaking for a group. When submitting written testimony, please provide 10 copies. Public Input is not intended as a forum for debate. The Board cannot take action on any items brought up during Public Input. If specific concerns need further investigation and response from the Board, you may request that an item be placed on a future agenda.
