Encourage responsible behavior three ways Families want children to learn to make responsible choices about school and life. But constant direction and criticism can wear kids down. To encourage positive behavior, say thank you when your child behaves responsibly without being told. Praise efforts, not just outcomes. And encourage involvement in hobbies that keep your child busy. Busy kids need less external control than those with too much time on their hands. https://tpitip.com/?13lM8433

Update
We have an internet outage for all of Pahrump and Amargosa. We are working with VEA and NSHE to solve the problem. This also affects our phones systems. At this time, schools cannot receive calls or call out using the school phones. Teaching and learning is still happening. There are no emergencies. We just wanted you to know why no one is answering any phones.

Preserve school-year memories your child can be proud of Show that you think your child is special by making a school memory book. Collect school-related mementos like photos of your child reading, the super-hard math problem your student finally solved, etc. In the spring, lay them on the floor in chronological order and let your child choose what to include to remember this school year. Put the items in a scrapbook. If you do it each year, your child will have a visual reminder of many things to be proud of. https://tpitip.com/?13lJ8433

Help your teen manage workload stress It's not unusual for teens to face a large workload as the end of a term approaches. Some will feel stressed. To help your teen cope, be a supportive listener. Don't try to fix problems; just let your student vent. Then, ask questions that will help your teen figure out ways to manage: "Have you created a study schedule?" "Could you reschedule an activity?" Also be sure to encourage healthy eating and exercise, and make sure your teen gets plenty of sleep. https://tpitip.com/?33lH8433

Spark imagination with picture books Picture books are not just for preschoolers. They are great tools for stretching any child's creative thinking. Look at a picture book with your child and ask questions such as: "Can you tell me a story about what you see?" "Can you imagine what happened before this?" "What do you think will happen next?" "What do you think the artist was trying to say?" See how many stories and ideas your child can think of. https://tpitip.com/?13lC8433

Encourage attempts at independent learning Some children can become too dependent on family help with schoolwork. To offer support while helping your child become an independent learner: Explain that one of the things students must learn is to do their own schoolwork, and you will help. Then, select one section of an assignment for your child to try alone. Make sure your elementary schooler knows what to do, then leave the room. If the work is totally wrong, explain the concepts again. If the work is fine, have your child do another section. https://tpitip.com/?13kd8433

Encourage three habits of responsible students Your teen may be turning schoolwork in on time. But is your student taking full responsibility for learning? Encourage your teen to make three responsible habits part of a daily routine: 1. Reading ahead (your teen will be better prepared for class and can ask better questions). 2. Reviewing class notes (it reinforces what your teen is learning). 3. Attending every class (your teen will know what the teacher thinks is important). https://tpitip.com/?33kb8433

Keep your teen's online life from causing school trouble Many teens record their personal thoughts in blogs, vlogs, videos or social media posts. But these are not the same as a private diary. They can be viewed by people all over the internet. To avoid trouble at school, make sure your teen knows never to post (even as a joke) threats to harm school staff, students or property. This includes harming a person's reputation. Your teen should never suggest breaking the law. And unless assigned to do so by a teacher, your teen should avoid posting during school hours or on school computers. https://tpitip.com/?33kZ8433

Trade places to promote understanding The next time you and your child have a disagreement, try switching roles. After things calm down, ask your child to pretend to be the parent while you pretend to be the child. Then act the way your child was acting, and have your "parent" explain why you should behave differently. Try to convince your "parent" it should be OK for you do as you want. You'll have some fun and each get a better idea of the other's point of view. https://tpitip.com/?13kZ8433

Enjoy a holiday word game Add a secret ingredient to your holiday feast this year: learning! Entertain your child (and the rest of the family, too) with this classic game. Pass out pencils and paper and ask people to make as many words as they can from the word "celebration." Or try a hands-on variation: Spell out a word with Scrabble tiles (or cardboard tiles you make yourself), and let your child rearrange the letters into new words. https://tpitip.com/?13kW8433
